Q: What is Yume Nikki?
A: Yume Nikki is a game that was created in 2004 using the program RPG Maker 2003, by someone in Japan named Kikiyama (who may have watched Kaidan a few too many times if you ask me, lol). In it you play a girl named Madotsuki, a shut-in who will not leave her apartment. Pretty much the only thing you can do with her is make her go to sleep, which causes her to enter a vast and bizarre dream world.
Q: OMG is it scary??
A: It is generally considered creepy, yes, but everyone's opinion is different.
Q: What is the object of the game?
A: The game's objective is to gather 24 "effects" (abilities you can use to change your appearance). You cannot reach the game's ending until you gather all 24 effects, drop them in the Nexus (the first room of the Dream World) and then wake up. A quick tour of the apartment then will reveal Madotsuki's only escape.
Q: The ending is so depressing!!1one!
A: Yep. Hey, I didn't write it. I prefer not ending the game anyways. There's far too much to see and do in the Dream World, why end it?
Q: What the heck is that Uboa thing?
A: The famous "Uboa Event" is a random event that happens once in every 65 tries in a specific room in the game. Uboa is...a thing that looks like a person-sized, hooded head wearing a weird distorted Noh mask. He does not move (unless you use the Cat effect on him) and basically does nothing. His sudden appearance and his creepy theme music have, let's say, "endeared" him to many a J-horror fan.
Q: What does it it say in Japanese on the game console in Madotsuki's room?
A: Translated, it says "Family Game'.
