Wimpy has been on numerous adventures at Popeye's side. He has met monsters, witches, and all sorts of brutes from this Earth and beyond. And, he always manages to survive, either by his own wits or by Popeye's fists.
One thing that I always thought was odd: I've never seen Wimpy laugh (in the strip). I may just not have read enough. He is usually calm cool and collected, but he has been angry, he has been frightened, and he has been nervous--but does this man ever laugh? My guess is that he goes home and laughs at everyone he cheated that day behind closed doors--but I have been known to be wrong about things on occasion. ;^)
Another thing: Wimpy is quite the ladies' man. It's his silver tongue, again. He can sweet-talk any woman on Earth (and will surely try it if he finds out she has access to hamburgers). He has wooed all sorts of females, human and otherwise. He has had more than one affair with the SeaHag, and their relationship to this day is questionable.
But above all, Wimpy is probably the most hated person in the entire comic strip. More than Bluto, more than the SeaHag. It's his own fault, of course. "Yer a disgrace, Wimpy!" Popeye has sputtered on more than one occasion. But he's not really a bad person. It's the truth that he has betrayed his friends in exchange for promises of food or safety, but he has also vehemently refused to commit murder regardless of threat or reward.
He was on the scene when Popeye first encountered Swee'pea (making him like Swee'pea's godfather in my opinion), and promptly began using babysitting the infant as an excuse for cleaning out Popeye's refrigerator. In short, all of Wimpy's successes by way of freeloading have ensured his status as the resident moocher, forever.
The talented author and humorist Jean Shepherd is also a Wimpy fan. In his wonderful short story "The Return of the Smiling Wimpy Doll", he wrote the following passage.
Here is what Leonard Maltin had to say in his book Of Mice and Magic (which I had to read in more than one animation history class).
