Lydia's fascination with horror movies, gothicism, ect have alienated her from her living peers, yet have made her a perfect candidate for friendship with a Neitherworld ghoul. And, her calm demeanor and level-headedness have made a her a perfect candidate for being Beetlejuice's best friend. Lydia is, in fact, the only person who can tell BJ to do something and he'll actually do it--even including telling the truth and (shudder) bathing.
